2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/3 cup unsalted butter, chilled, cut in 1/2 inch cubes
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled to room temperature
1/3 cup milk
1 large egg
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup broken walnuts (additional whole walnuts for garnish,
optional)
Prep
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Lightly
grease an 8" circle on a baking sheet (or parchment paper).
In a large bowl mix together flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder and salt.
Cut in butter using a pastry blender or 2 knives until crumbly.
In a small bowl combine milk, chocolate, egg and vanilla.
Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and knead to combine.
Knead in broken walnut pieces.
With lightly floured hands, form dough into a 7" diameter circle in the center
of the baking sheet.
Cut into 8 wedges with a serrated knife.
Decorate the edge with a walnut, if desired.
Bake 17 to 20 minutes until a toothpick comes out with a few crumbs clinging to
it.
Remove the baking sheet to a wire rack and
cool for 5 minutes.
Transfer the scones to the rack to cool.
Recut wedges, if necessary.
